In the region of Panem, formerly known as North America, 12 districts surround a city know as ‘The Capitol’. The Capitol is incredibly rich and its people think that they control the districts – which they do – so they created ‘The Hunger Games’. In The Hunger Games, two ‘tributes’ from each district fight for their lives, until one winner emerges from the arena.
Katniss Aberdeen, a 16-year-old girl, volunteers to save her sister from having to participate in The Hunger Games. Katniss is a teenager from District 12, the poorest of all the districts, she knows how to survive on little food and through harsh conditions, but this will be a different type of survival. She will be up against tributes with better equipment, proper training and the ability to kill.
‘The Hunger Games’ is a great read. It is brilliantly narrated and a very interesting spectacle. The fact that our world could, one day, become this twisted, dystopian world is shocking, but it makes you want to know more. No wonder this book has sold 23.5 million copies.
